Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit program coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Viewer Reception
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
