This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.

It might not have been at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.

“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”

The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.

The swine, contributed by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.

A Future Secured

This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.

“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”

Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
