The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in England's Test Series Team

England have chosen a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected spot.

The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected squad, showing there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if the spinner makes the final team.

Ground Conditions Favor Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five past matches.

During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.

Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.

At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers remains the more likely choice.

Alternative Choices Considered

There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.

But McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.

Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they come out and perform well out here.”
