The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," said the player after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.
He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the win at Manchester.
