The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
