The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
