Slot Insists He Is Secure and Has The Club's Backing After PSV Defeat
Arne Slot acknowledged that it's natural for doubts to be asked about his position following a further heavy loss versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their 9th loss in twelve matches, marking the club's poorest run after being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Dutch league champions on a tough evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I have got a lot of backing from above,” the coach remarked.
“It would be nice to change things and earn three points obviously but when you're coaching a team and struggling then it's expected that doubts arise.”
He continued, “I accept my position. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a tough spot but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Discussions with The Board
When asked to expand on his discussions with the team officials, Slot explained:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they don't phone me every single minute of the day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “In the normal discussions I sense the belief. But I've not talked to them since this game so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Issues and Player Response
The manager expressed regret over known failings from his squad in their Champions League defeat, namely wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I do not. I'm telling that to everyone,” Jones said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to think about it. I’m past feeling anger internally. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the words.”
He continued, “It's tough because I play for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen this club since I was young.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team going through a period such as this with results this poor.”
He finished, “However we still have the emblem on our chest. And until that badge is taken away, we’re always going to battle.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad back to the top, demonstrate to all once more the values of this club and why people call it the top club in the world.”
“At this moment, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
