Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of until after our chat. This serves as a powerful symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Right now, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
