NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, hesitated to declare this decision promptly after his victory in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability voters supported," Mamdani said in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, it will always live within me and my work," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his modest Astoria home.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.

The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
