New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
