Israelis have gathered across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The attack led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

"The aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed official commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations convened in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.

The official said the morning session concluded without significant progress, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not produce any major advancement," but noted that mediators are making efforts to close the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Points in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance provision
  • Future management of the territory

Public Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.

In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the war to finish in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the music event, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks carried on.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side district, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side district of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"When the dusk arrives, the dread arrives with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had received the remains of several people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area reported additional dead people had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the south, medical staff reported.
