England's Assistant Coach Shares His Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
A decade ago, Anthony Barry competed for Accrington Stanley. Today, his attention is fixed to assist Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines began through volunteering coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
Barry's progression has been remarkable. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a name with creative training and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs took him to elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as world-class talents. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the peak according to him.
“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a structured plan so we can to have the best chance.”
Focus on Minutiae
Obsession, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour day and night, he and Tuchel challenge limits. The approach feature psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. He stresses the national team spirit and avoids language like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Greedy Coaches
Barry describes himself and the head coach as extremely driven. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he states. “We want to conquer the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. It’s our job to not only anticipate of changes but to beat them and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.
“We get 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We have to play a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear during that time. It’s to take it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.
“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships among them. We have to spend time in calls with players, observing them live, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”
Upcoming Matches
The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed their place at the finals by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.
“The manager and I agree that the style of play ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the adaptability, the robustness, the work ethic. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.
“To make it light, we have to give them an approach that enables them to play freely as they do in club games, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.
“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in attack and defense – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared these days. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are really trying to speed up play through midfield.”
Passion for Progress
His desire to get better is all-consuming. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. For self-improvement, he entered the most challenging environments imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton locally, and he trained detainees during an exercise.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included impressed and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that Chelsea removed most of his staff except Barry.
The next manager at Chelsea took over, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
