Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Content That Provoked the Dispute

The clip, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in military or intelligence capacities.

"Similar to us, you all took an oath to defend and defend this constitution," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can refuse unlawful commands, you have to refuse unlawful commands. No one has to execute commands that break the law or our founding principles."

The Former President's Angry Reaction

The video message reportedly trigger a heated reaction from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Respond

Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader issued a combined statement denouncing the remarks.

"Violent politics has no role in America," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our country with great patriotism and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky calls for execution against congressional representatives, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to make certain the safety of these representatives and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged social media posts and retract his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.

Lawmakers' Defiant Answer

The representatives who were featured in the video also published a response.

"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who love this United States and took an pledge to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that important obligation."

"The significant point is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by death for us to repeat the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they execute their oath to the constitution and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They continued: "The entire nation must unite and condemn the former president's demands for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."

More Governmental Reactions

The Opposition leader also censured Trump's remarks and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the death of elected officials."

He added: "This represents an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and absolutely."

The GOP leader supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of the government instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the language and determine all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson said. "You have sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to orchestrate a video message to personnel of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."

She said: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is broken, it can cause casualties, it can result in confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally encouraging."
